Professional Background

While in graduate school, James worked with Habitat for Humanity in Tucson, Arizona, assisting with the
application and selection process for aspiring low income homeowners. This experience changed his
professional course from academia to the law. After earning his Master’s Degree in Latin American
History and becoming proficient in Spanish, James attended the University of Oregon School of Law. In
the months leading up to the start of law school, James worked for Quigley and Whitehill in Tucson, a
small firm handling business formation, real estate and estate planning.

While in law school, James volunteered hundreds of hours with Lane County Legal Aid, as well as
participated in the Civil Practice Clinic, Mediation Clinic, and a Judicial Externship with the Honorable
Judge Zennache. James graduated law school a semester early in December of 2008, earning a
Certificate of Completion in Public Interest Public Service Law and the Pro Bono Certificate.

After law school, James and his family moved to Tempe, Arizona. There he went to work with the Neely
Law Firm, and gained extensive experience in personal and business Chapter 7 bankruptcies, personal
Chapter 13 Bankruptcies, debt settlement, business dissolutions, mortgage modifications and debt
defense. James advised and represented hundreds of debtors throughout Arizona.

James and his family fell in love with the Northwest while in Eugene, and were plotting their return as
soon as they left. In 2014, they did just that, and James joined Eblen Freed. James’ practice focuses on
consumer protection, debt resolution, employment law and civil litigation.

James was born and raised near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, attended high school in Durango, Colorado then
moved to Tucson, Arizona for college. He has two daughters that keep his “free time” well spoken for,
but he tries to squeeze in cooking, hiking, playing guitar and having a good laugh with friends.
